How does Viralskool work?

How Does it Work?

We pitch a creative video assignment and you decide if you'd like to create and upload a video. Uploaded videos are reviewed and then shared on the Internet – on YouTube, Facebook and so on. After a certain number of days we count up the video views, and video votes from other Creatives, and then share out rewards and kudos in proportion to the views & votes.

Below we present the details you need to know about:

The Assignment Life Cycle

The diagram below shows the Assignment Life Cycle.  You'll notice that we have three phases:

  • the Production phase – the period in which videos are made, uploaded & reviewed
  • the Screening phase – the period in which videos are screened on the Internet and voted for
  • the Wrap – the period in which we calculate payments and share results.

Assignment Life Cycle

The Production Phase: Responding to Pitches

When an assignment is introduced to the community there’s a production period of 21 days during which Creatives create and submit their videos.

At the launch of a new assignment, the client will make available a certain amount of money – the reward – which is to be shared among the Creatives taking part in the assignment. The sharing of this reward is discussed in
The Wrap section.

During this period videos are not distributed throughout the Internet.

Viralskool and the client will review videos and inform you if there are any problems.

You may enter as many videos as you like for the same assignment.

This is a good time to check your Distribution to be sure that RoboShare (our automated video distribution engine) knows about your sites.

Check the section Creating your Viralskool Video for our top tips for creating videos that get the most exposure.

The Screening Phase: Sharing Videos

During this period videos are distributed throughout the Internet.

First, RoboShare spreads your videos to all the personal sites you told it about.

Second, all videos are shared to all the Viralskool channels we have on
YouTube and other sites.

Third, everyone has to give a vote to someone else's video. You can only vote on one other video and never your own. If you change your mind and try to vote again, your vote will switch.

If you come to an assignment late and miss the
Production phase, you can still enter a video during the Screening phase.

During the Screening phase we monitor views and votes across all the sites – yours and ours. As it becomes apparent which videos are being shared, discussed and modified the most, Viralskool backs these videos with additional support and promotes popular videos to ensure they become even more popular. We do this with our copy of the video, not yours.

If we notice that a video is a “slow-burner” and starts to perform well with time, we’ll switch allegiance and promote that video.

The Wrap

When the Screening period is over, we:

  • stop the voting and view counting
  • calculate the rewards
  • pay any rewards won to your PayPal account.

Reward Calculation

We calculate reward payments based on a mathematical function of views and votes. There may also sometimes be an additional prize for videos we or the client particularly liked or want to reward.

We chose to use a mathematical formula to calculate rewards rather than just a simple view or vote count because we want to ensure that the best performing videos take a slightly bigger share of the reward. Our formula also reduces the possibility of cheating or gaming the system.

Once calculated, the scoreboard is published so everyone can see how much each video was rewarded. Payments are paid directly to your PayPal account as the scoreboard is published.
